Five Minutes with...purpleshirt
We caught up with three-piece jazz band purpleshirt ahead of their appearance here at Sage Gateshead during New Year New Artists Festival on 18 January.
What can people expect from your show?
People can expect a joy-filled combo of improvisation, funk-rock grooves and jazz harmony with the atmosphere of three guys playing at their local jam night.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
All three members of purpleshirt have such dramatically differing influences, but between the three of us we share inspiration from Tom Misch, Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck and Organ Freeman.
Who is your favourite new musician?
We’re big Jacob Collier guys. We’re so focused on being imaginative and spontaneous within our live sets and Jacob’s creativity never fails to amaze us. Whether you love him or hate him, his virtuosity knows no bounds!
What does performing at Sage Gateshead mean to you?
The Sage is the pinnacle of live music in the north east for us, particular because it is one of the best for new and exciting music that inspires us. It has been a musical dream for all of us to play there, and even being a partner of their Summer Studios in the summer of 2018 was such an exciting moment for us. It’s an opportunity we want to take full advantage of and hopefully it won’t be the last time we get an opportunity to perform at one of the most inspiring venues in the country!
What’s coming up next for you?
We’re announcing a headline gig after playing at Sage Gateshead that will be in the spring time, giving us a month or two to continue writing new material and sort out an exciting gig with other super talented local bands!
